The Painful Truth. And why I’m leaving the Doctor Who fandom.

writing

Trust me when I say this is not the easiest decision to make. But I do believe it’s a good decision and I thought I’d tell you all the whys behind this new way of thinking.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am uncomfortable with the direction of Doctor Who. Sure, I knew in the beginning of my obsession that this WAS  sci-fi and automatically false, but I didn’t see the extraordinarily creepy characters and I DEFINETELY didn’t pay mind to how many episodes I had to skip because I didn’t like the sound of the synopsis or because 5 minutes in and I was already much too scared to fall asleep. (and note, I don’t scare easily.)
I just shrugged off the disturbing aspects of Who and got back to trying to decipher the whys of the weeping angels or “hey did you see Matt’s newest bowtie?”. It wasn’t until I had my 13th birthday party, and got DW merch,did I start to realize how kind of…. twisted it was. I received the Doctor Who Character Encyclopedia along with Funko Pop figurines of the Tardis and The Doctor, as well. When I looked through it I was a little shocked at how evil some of them looked. My parents looked at them too. They made me keep the book at the top of my closet so my siblings wouldn’t find it.
And the seasons have only gotten worse. With episodes like The Satan Pit, Night Terrors, The God Complex, etc  and gay characters like Madame Vastra and Canton Everett Delaware III, the series is nothing but just. Weird. I am in no support at all of the homosexual lifestyle. It is strictly unbiblical and Scripture specifically says it is a sin, yet I was in FULL support of a TV series that involved things like evolution, new age culture, gay marriage, etc. It’s just not right.
Madame Vastra and Jenny
Something that only added to my un-easiness is , I would be at church or watching YouTube or reading a book review and someone would mention Philippians 4:8 which says “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things.” So, yeah. DW didn’t really meet up with any of those. In an age where Television and media are becoming more corrupted I am constantly finding myself having to re-evaluate what I consume visually. Guys, it’s hard to break away from this fandom world. It’s fun. The fangirls are fun too! But I can’t help but think that God wouldn’t exactly be happy with me if I invited Him over for a Who marathon.
Now, I love sci-fi! That’s partly why I fell in loved with this series, but I discovered the  paranormal and supernatural elements and I was beginning to feel downright squirmish. Ya’ll, I just DON’T like it when TV producers mess around with God.
In the past, every time I would get the little whispers of my conscience (Holy Spirit), I would make the excuse of: “Oh but the show has such  good morals! I can just overlook the negative and focus on the positive, right?” But that’s where I was totally wrong. The Devil uses things that LOOK holy and pure on the outside and makes us believe they’re acceptable to reel us in and deceive us. And it’s not just Doctor Who that I’ve been tempted to try out. It’s just about every YA book/Tv series out there.
Harry Potter: “Oh, I can overlook the magic and witchcraft! They learn lessons about friendship and bravery and courage. What’s so wrong with those ?”
ShadowHunter world: “Demons, magic, spells, oh….But there’s so many great aspects! They talk about the  importance of books..Isn’t that worth a little bit of inappropriate scenes?”
Once Upon A Time: “Oh but the  action is so spot-on and the romance is superb, I can forget about the future-predicting, and the spells.”
That’s not even all, (although I won’t bore you to death with the others).
I realize my new outlook isn’t popular, accepted, fun, and I even know most of you are going to ignore all of this, but I do ask  one thing of you. Just think about it. Contemplate it. Pray about it.
~Until next time,
  1. Way to go, Halee! I know that it wasn’t easy for you having to give that up, but I totally applaud you for yielding to God’s voice on the matter! A while back, there was a show that I used to watch that I LOVED. It always had such great story lines and I looked forward to it every week. BUT, God began to convict my heart of all the awful things in the series. I didn’t want to give it up, because a lot of people I knew watched it and didn’t have a problem with it, so I thought I would come off as a buzzkill! But I finally gave it up. And you know what? I don’t even miss it anymore! I felt so much better when I gave it up!
  2. I think you are making some really great decisions. There is a ton of stuff that isn’t really doing anyone any good to watch!! Thank you for sharing this, because there are a lot of people who have these same thoughts in their hearts about what they’re watching and want to change. <3
  3. Brave decision, Halee!! I know from experience how hard it can be to give up something that you like a lot for conscience’ sake. It is SOOOOOOOOO, so easy to justify things in our own minds! Thank you for sharing your decision… It takes guts to do so. <3
